Miami Beach is looking to improve pedestrian, bicycle and transit facilities on 17 Street between West Avenue and the Beachwalk. Currently in a feasibility study phase, the project would upgrade pedestrian infrastructure and incorporate bus and bicycle lanes.

Seventeenth Street from the beach walk to Alton road is planned to be reconfigured. East of Meridian Avenue, the right lanes in each direction will be converted to dedicated shared bus-bike lanes. West of Meridian Avenue, the center turn lane will be removed and a four foot painted bike lane will be installed with no buffer or protection.

The Miami Beach Chapter supports the proposed plan East of Meridian, and partially supports the portion West of Meridian. For the safety of cyclists, it is essential that bike lanes be buffered or protected, four foot painted bike lanes should not be next to four lanes roads without protection.
