We're fighting for the first bus.

Morning Metrobus service (between 4-6am) is the lifeline for Miami-Dade's working people. These routes move Miamians to early shifts at nursing jobs, construction, school, and daily life. Cutting them not only hurts riders; it stifles our economy. It makes it harder to live and work in Miami.

This budget is not final. Miami-Dade County Commissioners will vote on September 17. We are asking them to restore $12.4M for morning service.

The budget crisis explained

While costs to run county services are consistently on the rise, departments were asked to limit their spending increases for next year’s fiscal year. Running today's bus service costs $31.4 million more than the county has budgeted for next year. This is why, once again, transit it on the chopping block, and cuts have been proposed for Miami-Dade Metrobus.

What this means

In addition to the cuts proposed to the Metrobus service, Miami-Dade is struggling to build reserves and prevent this from becoming a chronic funding issue.  
  • The county is drawing down its Transportation Infrastructure Improvement District (TIID) reserve — the dedicated transit fund — to avoid even deeper cuts.
  • The TIID does replenish with new development and real estate growth around Miami-Dade. However, the annual amount is not certain.
  • The TIID was designed to fund new rapid transit projects and corridor infrastructure. By spending it on current operations, we're sacrificing the transit expansion Miami-Dade needs tomorrow.
